Fish Market/Darling Harbour

So I'm a few days behind, haven't been on the computer too much and haven't uploaded my photos from my camera either. This heat is taking me to new levels of lazy! I'm also having issues moving the pictures around, so they're going to be at the end and they are in the reverse order to what I took them in, so this post is a little messy. Will try to sort this out at a later date.

Two days ago Simon and I were left to explore the city again, so we decided to be adventurous and walk from Glebe to the Fish Market. What looked to be quite a trek turned out to be a super quick walk, which was great. Sydney, at least the downtown core, seems like Vancouver in that it is pretty compact. I've also noticed that because driving is on the other side of the road, so are the escalators. And people are consistently trying to pass us on the other side too, which is throwing me off more than the driving! But I digress.

The Fish Market was a real experience. The closest comparison I could make is to Granville Island Market, it has the same kind of feel. We were a little overwhelmed and weren't sure what to get for lunch, so we sat down to try to figure it out. The benches outside were packed so it wasn't long til two guys asked if they could join us. In what I am beginning to see is typically Aussie friendliness, they offered us some of their beer and prawns and told us all about stuff we should do that day, and offered advice about Canberra etc. They too seemed skeptical that we were Canadian until we talked more about Vancouver, as one of them had been there.

After speaking with them we took their advice for a good lunch, which there's a picture of below. Then we headed off in the direction of the Opera House via Darling Harbour. We didn't make it as far as the Opera House (did the next day though, pictures coming soon), but we made it to the Harbour. I am hellbent on not wearing anything but flip flops in this heat but it's not really working for the long-distance walking situation. So we turned back after the harbour and lounged by the pool for a few hours before heading to dinner at a Thai takeaway place on Glebe Point Road. There is an abundance of Thai places here, which makes me really happy. And as someone who is trying to drastically cut meat consumption (not seafood so much), the veggie options are delicious.

Below are the pictures of our walk. Yesterday we wandered downtown for a few hours before heading to Culberra, which is where we are now. As a result, I may not be posting again til we hit Canberra on Sunday, but I'll try to post again soon, particularly about the wildlife here, which is amazing to see in nature and not, for example, at the Biodome :-)

Here are the pictures in really random order:

Simon looking out at Darling Harbour from the pedestrian bridge (don't remember what it's called!)

A view of inside the Fish Market. This doesn't do it justice though, it was huge and very packed with people!

Our lunch - sashimi, seaweed salad, and king prawns. So yummy!

Another view of the harbour from the bridge.

The lighthouse. Mark it made me think of you!

A view of a submarine in the harbour, taken from the foot bridge.

An outside view of the Fish Market from where we were sitting for lunch.

  1. What's with all the US hating going on down there? Weird. You should sew a Canadian flag to you bag or something.

I miss you, Chelsea! Can't wait to read more!!
