Yes, that was a Mr. Rogers reference, hehe.
Well, week 1 is officially over. Three classes down, a couple of workshops/library tours in (wow the libraries are awesome), finding out I'd made the cut for Student Rep (yay, more work, but at least I'll meet people!), meeting different people from all over the world. I'd say it was a relative success!
All three of my classes seem really interesting, just require a TON of reading. Yesterday I read solidly for 3-4 hours, and only got through 2 1/2 of 4 articles for one class. And I have three of those! And papers soon! Eep. At least what I'm reading is interesting, even if it's a little dry at times. Yesterday I read all about the International Red Cross came about, and the historical context of aid development. That type of stuff interests me a lot. Particularly after being in a non-profit setting for the last three years.
Simon and I found a little piece of awesome yesterday, which is the Grad Bar. From 5-7 on Fridays they do cheap drinks, and there's a three-piece band that plays, and while there is an inside for the cold months this all takes place outside in an enclosed area of the University House. It looked like a Secret Garden, almost like you had to be invited in to know about it. There were lots of Grad Students, PhD students and even a lot of faculty and staff from the looks of it. And everyone was just there hanging out getting a start on their weekend, in good spirits because it was a sunny Friday afternoon. I hope when Simon and I eventually meet people that we'll be able to make that a tradition, it seems like the right way to start the weekend. There was even a barbeque going on, but it didn't start til after we'd bought and eaten a giant plate of fries (chips!).
Last night we didn't get up to too much. I was exhausted for some reason and didn't go to bed much later than I do on weeknights. That inevitably lead to me waking up at the same time I do during the week this morning, so I got a head start on laundry by being the first person there when it opened at 8:30. I also got a run in, this time going down by the lake. It was gorgeous. There were tons of people out which was great, and there's a nice long run/bike path along the lake to follow. The lake was still and calm, and there were a bunch of rowing teams practicing. It makes me want to go see what the dragon boating is all about, but I'm also intimidated having zero upper body strength! I don't want to be the one holding the boat back :-)
Not sure what I'll get up to today. Simon needs to start his readings but I'm trying really hard not to do readings on weekends, so that I can use them for essay-writing when that starts. I do want to set up a timetable to stick to though, so I can keep myself on point and not spend hours doing nothing, which let's face it, given lack of structure I would be very likely to do! It's so pretty out that I may go for a bike ride. I think tomorrow I want to explore the Botanic Gardens since they're right on the other side of the street from our place.
I know a lot of you probably want to hear from Simon, and believe me I'm trying to get him to write something here. It's a slow process, but hopefully it will happen soon, just as soon as I can pull him away from his endless supply of sports-related podcasts :-)
Until next time!!
